WHAT ARE YOUR OFFERINGS FOR SWIM LESSONS?
Lifesaving Society Swim for Life swimming lessons are available for those ages 3 to 99! We typically offer private, semi-private, adult groups, and parent & tot lessons. However, offerings can vary from season to season. Please check our GetActive website for up-to-date information on current offerings.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRIVATE AND SEMI-PRIVATE LESSONS?
Private lessons are taught on a 1:1 swimmer-to-instructor ratio. Semi-private lessons are taught on a 2:1 swimmer-to-instructor ratio. Semi-private lessons are a great option for siblings and/or friends who are at the same level! To register for a semi-private lesson, you must register the first swimmer as a private and then add the second swimmer as an add-on to the lesson.
HOW DO I MAKE SURE I’M IN THE RIGHT LEVEL OR DON’T KNOW WHAT LEVEL I AM IN?
We welcome swimmers of all levels and abilities! If you know what level you are at, no problem. All participants will be screened during the first lesson so that the instructor can place them at the appropriate level. We also encourage you to talk to your instructor about your previous swimming experiences so they can ensure you are evaluated at the correct level. If you have a report card from previous lessons, please bring that in as well.
HOW ARE SWIMMERS EVALUATED FOR EACH LEVEL?
All swimmers are evaluated using Swim for Life curricula from the Lifesaving Society of Canada. More information on the swimmer levels can be found on the Lifesaving Society website.
HOW LONG ARE LESSONS?
Each lesson is held once a week for 8 weeks. Specific dates for each lesson can be found on the aquatics website. Each private, semi-private, and parent & tot lesson is 30 minutes long, while each adult group lesson is 45 minutes long.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO MY SWIMMING LESSON?
All swimmers must bring swimmers such as a bathing suit or clean athletic clothing and a towel. Goggles are optional but highly recommended!
WHY IS MY CHILD SOMETIMES OUTSIDE OF THE WATER DURING THEIR LESSON?
The Lifesaving Society program teaches lifeguarding and first aid skills. Some of these items are taught outside of the water. If you are curious about what your child is learning, check out the curriculum.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO THE INSTRUCTORS HAVE?
All of our swim instructors are required to hold a current Lifesaving Society Lifeguard, First Aid with CPR-C, and Swim Instructor qualification. Most staff also hold more qualifications such as Lifesaving Instructor, First Aid Instructor, National Lifeguard Instructor, and more!
WHAT IF ME OR MY CHILD IS AFRAID OF WATER?
You’ve come to the right place! It is never too late to learn how to swim. All of our instructors are professionals, trained to guide you in your learning. If you have had a traumatic experience with water, have a conversation with your instructor, or email aquatics@queensu.ca so your instructor can have a unique approach to meet your needs.
